Storytelling: Why Does It Still Work?

Updated: Oct 14, 2023

If you reduce your content to just words, who do you think will consume it?

Possibly the algorithm.

You aren't creating for the algorithm, are you?

You aren't writing for the algorithm, are you?

You aren't selling to the algorithm, are you?

You are writing for people - real humans behind screens. So let your writing reflect that.

Written content is still a popular way for people to consume content and if you aren't using the fundamentals of storytelling, you are doing your brand and product, a mighty disservice.

So, how do you effectively use the principles of storytelling to create content for your brand?

  • Create Rhythm: As David Perrell states,'Great writing has rhythm. It’s like a dance, and words are the music that create the atmosphere. The easiest way to add rhythm to your writing is to vary sentence length. Short sentences speed things up, and long sentences slooooooowwwwww things down.' Cleverly illustrated in the photo below:

  • Build Anticipation: Alfred Hitchcock said: “There is no terror in the bang, only in the anticipation of it.” Storytelling allows you to create tension, which can take your reader through an enticing journey - something that gets his pulse racing, raising his heartbeat ever so slightly, just enough to hold his attention to your word, so you can convey your message, like nobody else does.

  • Eliminate Boredom: Effective storytelling vehemently discards mundane, run-of-the mill ideas and replaces it with ideas that showcase cause and effect, rising tension and action. If you want to capture attention, steer clear from the usual.

There you have it - 3 super simple ideas to incorporate effective principles of storytelling in your content. Whether you are writing for Instagram, LinkedIn or the web, you'll be able to use these principles to elevate your copy.
